This week we will be adding a new activity called Listening Dragon. Each week a different student will be sent home with a canvas bag containing a journal and a stuffed toy dragon, Listening Dragon. I ask that students keep Listening Dragon at home for a week, and return it the following Monday. Students, with the help of their parents, should journal about the activities they do with Listening Dragon during the week. For those of you who know the Flat Stanley story it is a way for children to write, draw, paste, photograph, or color the things they do with Listening Dragon. While your children are in the very early stages of writing, they should be able to write something, or dictate to you their thoughts. This should be a fun exercise. So please do not pressure your children to be perfect, to write everyday, or write anything. All you need do is give gentle encouragement for your child to express themselves in some way. It is my hope that students will enter at least one event, if not more, in our Listening Dragon journal.
The student will return Listening Dragon the next Monday and will share Listening Dragon's adventures with the class. Encourage your child to read to Listening Dragon even if they make up a story while looking through a favorite book. Reading to others is a great way to build confidence.
Listening Dragon comes in a bag, with the journal and a stuffed dragon. I look forward, along with the class, in hearing about Listening Dragon's time with your family.
