Apples, Apples, Apples

Today begins apple week for us!  No, not Apple Cup.  You may not know it, but today is Johnny Appleseed Day.  After morning group, which was led by Alex, I read a poem about Johnny Appleseed.  Then for reading group the class read the book Applesauce.  Now, you can't talk about apples, Johnny Appleseed, and applesauce without eating apples and making applesauce.

We followed an age old family recipe.  The children each peeled their own apple. Then I cut them into smaller pieces, and into the crock pot they went, along with a cinnamon stick.  It did not take long for the aroma of cooking apples to fill the room, and indeed the entire school.  After awhile I added brown sugar and in a little while it was finished.  After chilling it we enjoyed our class-made applesauce at the end of the school day.

To add to our apple enjoyment day we also had some child size apples to go with our regular morning snack.

In phonics we worked on the letter "D" "duh", and reviewed all the letters we have worked on. E-F-D-P

For math we started the new unit 2-1, working again on the meaning of more, fewer, and the same as we look at math problems.

I also sent out an email about our 1st field trip to Nature Vision in Carnation next month.  Thank you Stacy Highland (Alex), and Kari Vanderhouwen (Weston) for volunteering to drive and help chaperone.

I hope to see you all at curriculum night this Wednesday!

Mr. M.
