Go, Go, Go

We began today a new curriculum unit called Myself and Others.  It's a journey into understanding how in some ways we are very similar and in other ways very different.  It goes hand in hand with the five senses which we did last week.

Today we did self portraits with a keen interest to the details that make us who we are, and what makes us special.  Indeed we all are special and unique.  My eyes are brown, and yours are blue.  My hair is short, and yours is long.  My skin is lighter or darker or the same as yours.  I requested that the children steer away from the sometimes standard stick figures they often draw, and asked that they put some dimension to themselves in their portraits .

In reading today Go, Go, Go was our story.  Coincidentally I use the phrase "go, go, go" to bring the class to attention.  They respond "alay, alay, alay".  Don't ask me what it means, but it has a nice ring to it, and it is unique in getting my kids attention at recess (when there is often three or more classes out there).

In handwriting we continued with the letter "B" using our chalk boards today and sponges in our letter formation.  In phonics, "B" again was featured.  I made it a choice day today for our writing segment.

Story time was with the popular children character, Dragon.  Dragon Gets By was the title of today's adventure with Dragon.

I introduced a beading center choice today.  Not your normal size beads or the beads you snap together, but the tiniest beads you can imagine.  The purpose is two fold.  Kids like making stuff, and I like the fact that it takes concentration, and a steady hand to hold and bead a safety pin.  It's great for finger strength and fine motor skills needed to form letters in handwriting.

The children finished the day with Spanish and we started the movie, Otis and Milo.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you tonight.

Mr. M.
