Fire Safety Week & Columbus Day

Today starts Fire Safety Week.  We will have a fair amount of fire safety books and projects to emphasis safety in the home.  It is also Columbus Day and I did a quick presentation about Christopher Columbus.  How he discovered America, how people back then thought the earth was flat, and that he was looking for a trade route to the Far East.  Using our classroom globe we did some exploring on our own.

I have sent home permission slips for the Remlingers Farm field trip.  The entire school is going on October 27th.  Our class is also going to Nature Vision next Monday.  I still need some of those permission slips back or your child will not be able to attend.

In reading we read On.  I read today two short fire related stories, Fire Engines, and Firefighters, Speeding! Saving! Saving!  In handwriting capital letter "M" was on our agenda, and for phonics the kids were challenged with Nan and Mop.  Today was also music day with Miss Amy.  We got all thumbs up from her on participation and attention!

I found it important to have an emergency class meeting today in that some behavior, a big mess with the pencils and erasers, that was totally unacceptable and out of character for our class.  Unfortunately no one took responsibility for it.  I explained how everybody makes mistakes and sometimes we do things that we should not do.  It is important however to be honest and to take responsibility for your actions.  The class lost all their stars for the day, but gained them back when someone took responsibility for those actions.  It is one of our four rules - take responsibility for your actions.  It is always better, I impressed to the children, to tell the truth.

We finished the day with math, lesson 2-5, and awarded a certificate to Sedona for her excellent self motivation in answering 100 questions on the IXL math website.
