Neighborhoods

In reading we turned our attention to recognizing colors with Fruit Colors as our book of the day.  In handwriting it was "T", and tomorrow we will finish capitals with the letter "J".  In phonics we did the "S" sound. In writing we journaled about any one of the "T" words we talked about.  Thanksgiving, and turkey were popular choices.  PE today.  In math we began the introduction of unit four.  This unit will involve sorting, and sequencing.  The terms greater and less were added to what they already know as more and fewer.  These are all learning activities that will set them up for addition and subtraction.  Lots of manipulative tools will be used so the children can visually see the problems they will be solving.

In social studies we started to talk about neighborhoods using the maps that most of the children have brought in.  Each one took us on a tour of their neighborhood, pointing out features on their maps.  We talked about how numbers are important in finding places, specifically how the mailman finds where to deliver letters to.  We have also been talking about even and odd numbers and it was fun predicting what the house numbers would be if you lived on the left or right side of the road.  This played into the children knowing what is their left, and what is their right.  Even house numbers on the right, and odd house numbers on the left.  It all helps children attach meaning to numbers and how they are used in everyday life.
