The class welcomed Bubba this Monday to class. I neglected to mention on Monday's blog post that Bubba has joined our class. He seems to be a hit. Bubba is a Royal Python, or more commonly known as a Ball Python. They are native to Africa and spend much of their life under the ground, except at night when they hunt. You might ask why a snake? Well, I have always wanted one, and almost had one, but that is a long story. As a learning tool I think snakes help some conquer fears. Fear stops some of us in our tracks. Fear of trying, the kids will tell you, is one of my teaching points. The word "can't", has been banned from the classroom. We always try, and try our kindergarten best. But, a child who conquers their fear, I would suggest, might be able to conquer their fear of writing, or sounding or making a mistake, a common problem with kindergartners.
Well, my fear that the children might be fearful of Bubba was mistaken. They all wanted to pet or hold him, and most held him. Mostly the girls, passing him around. He did not seem to mind at all. Children can be fearless!
Teaching point - Never pick up a snake or go near a snake in the wild. Ever!
